A couple of tools that were recommended by the group. I haven't tried these but they look like great tools worth trying.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ - application. free sound capture and editing
http://www.jingproject.com/ - screen casting and narration. free and affordable versions

Audacity is a super tool. I am not sure how it compares to others, but it does more than enough for the things that I need. I am not the audio pr but it is great for general cutting and pasting sounds, multi-track, twiddling with volume, various codex (codicies?) It's been able to do all that I ask.

Plus, you can get it as a portable app that runs off a jump drive. (http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/audacity_portable)
