ChickTech is a non-profit organization based in Portland, Oregon dedicated to retaining women in the technology workforce and increasing the number of women and girls pursuing technology-based careers. Our current activities involve facilitating hands-on technology-centric events. For our ChickTech: High School events, we focus on involving girls who have never created technology, especially low-income and at-risk students.
ChickTech’s inaugural kick-off event attracted over 100 girls in the Portland area. We had 120+ applicants for 100 spaces, with a diverse group from public and alternative schools. 53 of the 94 participants who completed surveys at the 2013 Portland ChickTech: High School event showed an increase in confidence of their technical abilities after just a 2-day weekend.
ChickTech: High School begins with a weekend-long event for high school girls to spark their interest in high-tech careers. The workshops are all hands-on and interactive. Themes include robotics, web programming, gaming, and building computers. The participants continue to remain engaged through follow-up workshops.
We are bringing ChickTech: High School to Corvallis in an abbreviated format to better suit the more rural community. The event will be November 9, 2013, 8am-6pm for 100 girls from Corvallis, Sweet Home, Lebanon, Philomath and surrounding areas. Our activities are:
